Conceived by engineer and kinetic artist, Alexis Richter, The Dancing Fountain visualises sound in liquid form. Using proprietary algorithms, a high-frequency pump and a hand-machined turbine, the Fountain transforms music in real-time into a self-choreographed water dance.

Technology and creativity are breathtakingly brought together in The Dancing Fountain. Tuned and augmented over many years, the fountain presents a totally unique and fully automated interpretation of recorded and live music. The setup features:

• An 800L pool with a polished wood surround, designed to capture and recycle water
• A control centre from which the DJ orchestrates both music and fountain dynamics. The parameters provide precise control over the fountain’s mood.
• Sub-woofers discreetly situated beneath the pool and quadrophonic aluminium die-cast speakers surrounding the audience, creating an immersive but contained sound that emanates from the fountain.

The resident DJs play emotive and textural music with a varied but distinct “Fountain Sound”, from Classical to Glitch-Hop, Textural Ambient to Future Bass, Jazz to Psychedelic Dub. The Fountain has also danced to live sessions featuring drumming, hardware sets, and even group singing.
